Every Story Leaves Something Behind — a grand tall ship named Crimson Legacy docked at sunset, surrounded by a fleet of ships, with a treasure map and compass in the foreground

Every Story Leaves Something Behind

One of the most unexpected parts of writing a series is realizing that not everything continues forward.

Characters change.

Storylines evolve.

Entire ideas that once seemed important quietly fade into the background as the journey moves on.

As I work through edits for The Dream Realm, I've found myself reflecting on that more than usual.

Every story leaves something behind.

Some characters serve their purpose for a season.

Some locations appear only briefly before the story carries us elsewhere.

Some ideas that seemed essential in the beginning eventually give way to something new.

That is simply the nature of storytelling.

But every now and then, a character refuses to leave.

No matter how much the world changes around them.

No matter how many chapters pass.

No matter how many new adventures begin.

They remain.

Many of the characters within The Crimson Legacy were inspired, in one way or another, by people I met during my years playing Atlas.

Some of those friendships remain as strong today as they were years ago.

Some have changed over time.

Life has a way of carrying people in different directions.

Responsibilities grow.

Priorities shift.

Misunderstandings happen.

And sometimes people who once spoke every day find themselves speaking only occasionally.

Yet even then, the memories remain.

The adventures remain.

The impact remains.

Perhaps that is why certain characters continue to stand their ground within the pages of the series.

Because they represent more than a role within a story.

They represent moments.

Conversations.

Friendships.

Shared victories.

Late nights spent laughing when we should have been sleeping.

Journeys that mattered.

As Book Three has taken shape, I have noticed something interesting.

Many characters who were never directly inspired by real people have naturally faded into the background as the story evolved.

Not because they were unimportant.

Not because they were forgotten.

But because the story seemed determined to hold on to those who helped shape it from the beginning.

The mages remain.

Morgana remains.

And many of the characters whose roots trace back to those early adventures continue to find their place within the world.

Almost as if they refuse to be unwritten.

I suppose that is what legacy truly is.

Not simply what we create.

But what endures.

The people who leave fingerprints on our lives.

The experiences that continue to shape us long after they have passed.

The stories we carry forward, even when we don't realize we are carrying them.

Every story leaves something behind.

And perhaps the most meaningful stories leave a little piece of the people who helped create them.

As I continue the journey through The Dream Realm and beyond, I suspect there will be new characters, new adventures, and new horizons waiting ahead.

But I also know there are some characters who will always find their way home.

No matter how far the voyage takes them.

Because some stories are simply too deeply woven into the fabric of the journey to ever truly disappear.

Have you ever met someone who changed the course of your life, even if they are no longer part of your everyday world?

Sometimes the people who leave the greatest impact are the ones whose influence stays with us long after the journey itself has changed.

I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

Until next time Lovelies,

Always,

Ambrose Fider
